Choose 12 safe objects and arrange them on a tray beside a stocking. Everyone should be able to see the full tray from where they sit.
What you need
- Christmas stocking
- Tray
- Household objects
- Paper
- Pencils
A phone timer is handy for timed rounds. Set out supplies before guests arrive, and give the group one practice turn if the rules are new to them.
How to play
- Reveal the tray for 45 seconds while players silently observe. No writing yet.
- Cover the tray with a cloth or move it out of sight.
- Give everyone two minutes to list the objects they remember. Spelling does not matter.
- Reveal the tray and award one point per correctly remembered object. Play a second round with different objects if desired.
Prompts and round ideas
- Ribbon
- Wooden spoon
- Large ornament
- Mitten
- Greeting card
- Sock
- Tape roll
- Cookie cutter
- Pinecone
- Gift bag
- Pencil
- Small notebook
Make it work for your group
Use six objects for young children. Increase to 16 for adults, or ask one bonus question about an object’s color.
A host’s note
Use shatterproof objects and keep small items away from younger siblings. Do not use valuables or fragile decorations.
Plan your party flow
Explain the aim before handing out supplies, then demonstrate one turn. Let guests join as a player, helper, or spectator. Stop while the group is still enjoying the game rather than adding extra rounds just to fill time.
