Seat players in a circle with one sheet per person. Write each person’s name on the back so the page can return to them. Choose a shared theme such as an imaginary birthday cake.

Players: 4–14Play time: About 20 minutesBest fit: Ages 6+

What you need

A phone timer is handy for timed rounds. Set out supplies before guests arrive, and give the group one practice turn if the rules are new to them.

How to play

  1. Everyone draws the beginning of a cake for 30 seconds.
  2. At the signal, pass the paper left and add one detail to the new picture for 30 seconds.
  3. Keep passing until each paper has made a complete circuit. Avoid covering or crossing out another person’s contribution.
  4. Return drawings to their original owners, display them, and let each person invent a name for their cake.

Prompts and round ideas

Make it work for your group

With a large group, stop after six passes and return pages using the names on the back. For adults, try imaginary party venues instead of cakes.

A host’s note

Make it collaborative rather than a best-drawing contest. Ask everyone to add something kind and playful.

Plan your party flow

Explain the aim before handing out supplies, then demonstrate one turn. Let guests join as a player, helper, or spectator. Stop while the group is still enjoying the game rather than adding extra rounds just to fill time.
