Invite everyone to write three short statements about themselves: two true and one invented. Keep examples light, such as hobbies, foods, or amusing everyday experiences.
What you need
- Paper
- Pencils
A phone timer is handy for timed rounds. Set out supplies before guests arrive, and give the group one practice turn if the rules are new to them.
How to play
- The first person reads all three statements in any order.
- Allow the group one minute to ask nonintrusive follow-up questions. The speaker may answer or pass.
- Everyone votes for the statement they think is invented by holding up one, two, or three fingers.
- Reveal the fib and invite a short story about one true statement. Continue around the group with no required scoring.
Prompts and round ideas
- A food I have tried
- A hobby I once attempted
- Something I can make
- A harmless everyday mishap
- An unusual favorite snack
Make it work for your group
For coworkers, avoid statements about qualifications, performance, or confidential projects. Children can use favorites and simple experiences.
A host’s note
Tell people not to reveal anything they would rather keep private. The goal is a conversation starter, not catching someone out.
Plan your party flow
Explain the aim before handing out supplies, then demonstrate one turn. Let guests join as a player, helper, or spectator. Stop while the group is still enjoying the game rather than adding extra rounds just to fill time.
